Reviews for Gencare Lifestyle Federal Way at Steel Lake
Caring Staff, Billing Confusion
GenCare Federal Way (formerly Madrona Park/Emeritus) receives mostly positive reviews for its caring staff, comfortable environment, and supportive atmosphere, with families frequently praising individual staff members who go above and beyond. However, significant concerns recur around billing transparency and unexpected costs, inconsistent communication during transitions (especially to assisted living), staffing shortages affecting meal service and resident attention, and variable quality in memory care—with some families reporting minimal activities and inadequate oversight. Several reviews note management turnover and service decline after staffing changes, particularly post-January in recent years.
Valinda Horstman is knowledgeable and skilled and very dependable in her position at GenCare. My 98 yr Dad, blind, came from a home/ wife of neglect when we met Valinda. During our beginning tours/visits I noticed her personalness, and how she treats all staff, residents attentively. On those initial tours and inquiry meetings Valinda thoroughly explained policy, answered our questions on the paperwork and contract. She helped set up a moving company and offered solutions to remove a bedroom doo
Our family was looking for a memory care facility for our mother. We did a tour of the Gencare Lifestyle in Federal Way and everything seemed like a good fit for our mother. After touring a couple other facilities, we chose Gencare Lifestyle. Once my father signed all paperwork for mom's acceptance, the monthly charges were nearly double what my father initially thought due to all additional expenses which were noshalonty stated as additional costs.. During the visit, pricing was not transparen
The community, facilities, and staff at GenCare Federal Way are warm and welcoming. That said, families considering a move from independent living to assisted living may wish to plan this transition in advance. In our experience, the Federal Way team appeared under-resourced for this change: the process took more than nine weeks and required coordination with several different contacts. Our parents had already lived at the facility for a year. Also if a resident is hospitalized and returns unde
Meals and more staff to help the people in wheelchairs and that need extra help. Yes, I would recommend the community to other families even though it is very negative. When we first moved there it wasn't bad, but after January it went down hill. They let a lot of staff go. And got a new cook, and that is when the meals began to get bad
Easy for mom to get around, exercise program, friendly staff. They need more help in diner, too short staffed and not really balanced meals.
I would rate all of them five except for the activities, which I would rate a four. It's an excellent facility. The staff seem to really care about the residents and are responsive to their needs. The food is good. And the building and grounds are attractive and inviting.
My dad was there for a short time, the staff were amazing. He has a hospice patient and we needed extra support that the family could not provide to his level of care in his last month.
They keep messing up our billing and overcharging us. I've had to have it fixed twice. They were charging for services they were not providing and for services we didn't need. Also, the food is pretty bad. Otherwise it's been very good. But those are two pretty important factors.
Since my mom moved in this is the second director, she is very duplicitous and insincere. 95% of the rest of the staff is very caring.
My aunt has been happy at the Gencare facility. It has taken so much pressure off of my parents. I appreciate everything your team was able to offer.
It is a learning curve putting your parent into memory care and one that my siblings and I did not look forward to but it became 247 care. We felt Gencare was a great match for Mom, nice directors with a smile when we visited and lovely garden area, that in spring Mom will enjoying. Mom has had some medical issues that has been a little bit of a challenge, to get her signed on to the Home Doc and evaluated and obtain prescriptions. There are some issues with communication and follow up, this is
I was touring for a place in your memory care for my Mom. I received details about your facility from A Place for Mom, Jayson Sargent. I had an option of 5 facilities to visit, and after our tour in your facility, I felt comfortable with your surrounding. The outdoor garden areas are lovely and remind me of my Mom's yard so I thought this would be a nice location for Mom. Your staff is so friendly and listened to our needs and were very knowledgeable in the care of dementia residents. As we
I quite literally cant RAVE about how PHENOMENAL this facility is. When the topic of my father moving into an assisted-living facility came about, I had nothing short of anxiety. From scoping out the facility to getting questions answered, GenCare was absolutely incredible. When we moved into the facility, there were quite a few hiccups on our end via my father’s medical care needs. When I tell you the facility went ABOVE AND BEYOND for our family in order to assist in creating a safe and produc
[name removed] was EXTREMELY helpful through the whole process. I would rate all as 5. In addition, as mentioned, I highly commend [name removed] for her efforts, even though my Mom's time there was short. [name removed]was very thoughtful and caring in working through our situation, and extremely helpful and understanding of our predicament. She is to be greatly commended.
They have been supportive this entire time and I would rate them 5 in all categories. My loved one is doing well now and is happy there. They recently underwent a complete management and staff change and so far my love one, tells me it's seems that the care is still OK, but it is early days.
I would recommend them GenCare, fantastic facility and staff and reasonable price.
What I like the most about the Gencare Lifestyle are the multiple activities they have going on as well as the food that is serve - good. The staff and residents alike are genuinely loving and overall family friendliness .
We've had some issues with services, but my dad has declined rapidly. Can't say for sure why, but I'm guessing he doesn't want to be there. But he wouldn't want to be in any memory care unit anywhere. I would recommend to others.
When I had arrived from Georgia, everyone at GenCare Lifestyle of Federal Way community knew my name. There is always help for WHATEVER you may need.
When it comes to the meals and dining, as my Mom required a special diet and the dining room was NOT as accommodating as I was led to believe.. We gave the value for cost a 3 but only because my Mom's stay was so short. Also, want to put a HUGE plug in for [name removed]. She went WAY above and beyond expectations when it came to getting my Mom into the facility and care while she was there. My wife and I appreciate greatly what she did.
Great facility with people who care about your loved ones. The time my dad spent at Gencare was wonderful. Not too large or small. He not only received a lot of attention from the staff, but Gencare also has all the amenities of a larger facility but was just the right size for him to call home.
I don't know why Gencare is considered a direct competitor of [facility name removed]. We knew as soon as we walked in for our tour that we didn't like it. There was a terrible smell, we didn't care for location, and we hated the floor plan, both the units and entire facility.
When my parents and I were looking for an assisted living facility for them nearly 7 years ago, GenCare Federal Way was the clear front-runner. My mom and dad instantly felt at home there, thanks to the welcoming staff, comfortable surroundings, beautiful grounds, variety of activities and entertainment, and quality of interaction with employees and residents. They never regretted their decision to move there and have thrived in the GenCare community; it has felt like a family. Brianna, Maria,
Our family had an in person tour and we thought it was a really nice tour experience, but it was just not what we were looking for.
My loved one was cared for at this facility for awhile. It's a beautiful place. It's very clean and welcoming. The staff is very nice and warm. I just feel like it may be a better fit for Assisted Living than it is for Memory Care needs. That could just be our preference/experience. I would still recommend them to family and friends to check out and decide for themselves.
We have had a good experience with Gencare. They staff are responding appropriately to my family member's medical issues - transporting him, taking care of him, and keeping me informed. He's enjoying the amenities and all they're doing for him. He tells me he really appreciates that the food is good, and the social aspect has been very good. And he has a one-bedroom apartment that he enjoys living in.
I am very happy with the community and so is my dad. Gencare has been an excellent community for my father they are outstanding in all areas listed They treat us like family and we them. Gencare is close to my home and smaller facility that has a nice memory care unit. [name removed] their marketing director was also very informative and the team showed a caring approach - [name removed] and all her team
If you want a community where your loved one is going to feel like they are part of a family then this is the place to bring them. I shopped around and looked at a lot of communities and here we just feel like family. They are really open and great with both of us. It is a small community and because of this the director greets us all by name and every other person and family member that the director sees. The front desk is great and they are always happy and open to everyone that comes in. The
Wyncote Place treated my father with the utmost respect and care. The whole staff treated him like he was family. They keep my family informed of any issues as they occurred. It was a very hard decision to place my Dad in a Memory Care facility however I believe it was the best decision I made. My Dad has recently pasted but I know he received the best care available, provided by the best staff available. Thanks Wyncote Place!
I toured this facility while looking for a place for my loved one. However, I didn’t choose this community because it was older and I was looking for a brand new place. The décor was okay and it felt homey. The person who gave me the tour was friendly and knowledgeable. What I really liked about the rooms is the layout. I would recommend this facility to other families.
The care at this community. The staff is always caring and friendly. The menu is good with a very nice variety for her to choose from. She likes being involved with the outdoors and plants. We do like the environment and she seems to be very happy and content with the other residents. We would recommend the care at this community for other families
Mom is still adjusting to living at this community. They do keep the community clean and the grounds are nice. The memory care area is a locked down small area. The assisted living area is larger and a little nicer. We have been working through some minor issues such as her clothes coming up missing. The staff are nice and they encourage her to participate in some of the daily activities.
This is a very beautiful community. The person that took us on tour was nice, however they did not seem very knowledgable about the community. This community did not seem very active when we visited. They did not have an apartment available that would fit my loved ones needs.
This community is a much better choice to have placed my mother in for her dementia. The staff was nice when we toured the community they provided us with a lot of information about pricing and packages . I feel my mom would have gotten the one on one attention and help that she is in need of. The community looked clean and the residents seemed nice but since it wasn't my decision my sister chose another location.
We are happy with the care for my father's care. The staff is very caring and we like that they are attentive to his needs. The meals are really good and they offer good choices. They do have a lot of nice activities for him to participate with the other residents. We would recommend this community for the value, cleanliness, and care for other families.
This community was a little more expensive than what we were looking for. The rooms were smaller than what we were looking for. The people we met were nice and the community seemed clean.
Madrona Park is great! The staff is very friendly, the space is clean, and there are plenty of activities for my father to participate in. Overall great experience!
Mom is now a resident at Madrona Park. She is meeting new people and becoming settled. The facility is cleaning, the staff is friendly and helpful, and we are happy with the care services and daily activities. My brother is handling the financial piece, so I'm unqualified to address that question.
I have been told that my mother is participating in activities daily. We chose this community because it is close to home. We toured it and liked the place.
When I toured the Madrona Park, I noticed that the place was very nice and so were the people. When I got there for my tour, the tour guide was on time and had a lot of information for me. The place was a good choice, but we picked another community that we thought would for my mother's needs better.
just okay. didn't seem compassionate. Seemed more about the business than the person.
This is a nice community. The staff was very nice and friendly. They offer alot of activities. The food seemed to be good from what we were able to see. Other families might like this community for a loved one.
We enjoyed the time Lynn took to tour us. The facilities were nice, but we were looking for more Independent Living area. The $2000 welcome fee per person was hard to appreciate.
My family member lives in the memory care area. The staff don't seem to have skills o work it's Alzheimer's patients. They don't provide any areas of independent activities. They offer minimal activities, but to get to them you have to leave the area via an elevator. The memory care dining area is poorly lit. The outdoor area doesn't have cushions on the chairs. Patients roam the halls with nothing to do. Nothing on the walls are age related for seniors. The don't offer the Alzheimer's p
Too comprehensive for independent living.
My mother is doing well with the transition into the community. The community is pretty well-kept and clean. The staff is very kind and helpful to us. They do offer good activities for the residents. Overall it has been a good experience so far, and I would recommend this community.
Friendly staff, spacious living quarters, good food.
Our Mom has only been at Madrona Park for 3 weeks, but she has settled in very well. The caregivers are very kind and compassionate. They have involved her in daily activities, which she wasn't doing before. We are very pleased so far.
We left this facility because things did not work out there.
It was a very easy transition. They were most helpful with every step and had the answer to every question. It's not like you were pushed aside. All of the staff is friendly and the residents are happy there.
Dad wasn't at Madrona Park long before he took a fall. He was in memory care that was more independent. The staff was great and easy to work with. They probably need to hire more though for a better ration. It was expensive but probably in line with most facilities like this. He really needed a closer watch. It wasn't their fault we just didn't know he needed more care.
I am so pleased with Madrona Park . It's small and homey. It is fun to visit there. The friends I've taken to visit there really like it. The staff get him involved in anything going on. They have cookies and coffee for the residents. It smells like home. He gets help getting dressed, taking showers, and help when he falls. They have a lot of activities going on there. It's just overall been a great experience.
Emeritus at Steel Lake (now Leisure Care) is a very good place. My mother has dementia and has had a few challenges adjusting, and they have been very helpful in the process.
Memory Care is terrilble!! The residents are wheeled into the small dining room for meals and then parked in front of the TV for the remainder of their day. No activities except TV watching, most of the staff does not speak very good English and is very hard for elderly residence to understand. Food is luke warm at best.
My dad was first in Assisted Living. He had Alzheimer's and otherwise healthy. I would describe the Assisted Living portion as good. It was clean. There were some activities that involved music and that was great. The tendency was to do bingo or watch movies. They used to do field trips, but that is rare. Then my dad went to Monarch and then Spa, as his disease progressed. In Spa the bathrooms were shared and dirty. There was not enough staff. The only activities I saw was bouncing a b
They are great. They are really nice there. The food is good, but they serve a lot of broccoli, and they serve a lot of soup, there isn't a ton of variety. It's a very nice place, she likes her little spot. I like that I am able to take a weekend to myself here and there. We are pretty happy with them.
Unfortunately my loved one was only here a short time, but my impressions from her stay were very positive. It is a nice looking facility, and the staff here were all very professional, gentle, and kind.
I agree with not great my dad is in the memory care unit now and he never dressed I shower him his teeth are never in unless I put them in. The head nurse needs to work on her people skills. The Monarch is drab and depressing. My dad is always in his room there is no activities. He is showing signs of aggression since he's been there. They say he will never be in his room we keep them active have not seen it yet. He will be out of there soon. They need more training on memory care. The head nur
We really have had a great experience with Emeritus! The price is definitely fair, and you get a good value! They were close to home, but they also have Memory Care, which we wanted available in the future! Our loved ones have had a positive experience here as well! There were, of course, a few glitches in the beginning, but they were amazing! They were a huge help with moving, and it's been a very positive experience so far!
We were not happy with the care or attention that was paid to the residents. They only bathed our loved one once or twice a week, where she is now she gets showered daily. She always seemed to look dirty here. It seemed that nobody brushed her hair. They weren't able to handle her memory care needs to my satisfaction. Since moving her she is much calmer and more peaceful. She is cleaner and better cared for. I don't think Emeritus did a very good job.
Marketing Manager who was very helpful and professional, left suddenly. Other staff not very helpful. After watching PBS Special on Assisted Living Facilities which focused on Emeritus Nationwide, we are no longer considering them as potential.
A Place For Mom was really helpful and followed up real quick when we were in a crisis situation. Really accomodating and helpful, so I'd give a five for that.
The overall staff is friendly especially the general manager and the marketing manager. It feels more like a hotel then anything else. Mom hasn’t complained about the food either.
By far the best we've seen. The three stage approach is even better than we anticipated. They also offer an assessment without condition to our 'deposit' - a free service so we know the best placement and care package to start. This is very helpful when trying to plan for a changing budget. Emeritus provided us a printed price list for their base rents and care levels - not provided by Auburn Meadows. Emeritus also offered us the option to use my mom's long term care policy. We have been r
Loved building, rooms are nice, location is easy to get to.
Assisted living areas seem very nice, but memory wing felt depressing. I liked it that they take residents to local churches.
private apts, studio or bedroom; group activities; different levels on one floor. Garden activities; deck for outdoor use; older bldg, kept clean; garden has raised bed for group. staff supervision was very active; had nursing students, very good.
would be fine. very pretty
liked this one Director gave a great tour liked the units for mom things to keep her busy
